That will totally depend on one: what two professions you think best complements each other, two: how well you play the secondary skills, and three: your ultimate desire.
Some will tell you that a Ranger doesn't need to be complemented with a secondary profession but it would be wise to pick something.
I chose the Ranger\Necro profession as I enjoy the Ranger skills and the Necro spells.

IMO as posted in other topics, it has to be a pure ranger... there are wayyy too many good skills in the ranger profession that compliment each other in a build. I would say monk for unlimited rez (doesn't require attributes) instead of sometimes equiping a rez sig.
Or warrior to use sprint... instead of dodge because it lasts longer. But atm i just ignore my second profession. I am just about to complete ascension and will change mine to monk. Being elemental seconary is pointless.. once again it has too many good skills and you wouldn't be able to take advntage of the rangers.
Good rangers skils i could easily fill up the build with. Tigers fury, barrage, apply poison, duel shot, kindle arrows, distracting shot, troll Unguent, and a trap, i mean, you could add in a rez sig, other traps, pin down for pvping combined with a skill to speed you up and avoid attacks such as dodge, i mean there is NO room for other professions imo.
edit: You have to to get a second profession, doesn't mean you have to use it, just put your attributes in whatever you want. I reccommend Marksmenship, wilderness survival, and expertise.

I'm an R/E. The fire elemental AoE's were nice before acension. Now they are pointless. I picked up the quest to change to monk secondary. Smiting specifically. Rangers truly have a total package. However, that package is VERY hard to open.

hmm, i don't understand how you mean the package is very hard to open? I have most of my 'perfect' build skills, just need some of the elite and tigers fury e.t.c. Could you explain?

The reason that I think it is hard to play a ranger well, is because there is not a "godly set" of skills that you can use in all situations. You need to know what you are up against and dress accordingly. If your up against casters, bring interupts...if your against melee, bring traps...ect. =p I'm still fairly new even though I have a few level 20 chars...but I'm really liking the ranger. =)
